HONORS INTERMEDIATE COMPOSITION
What It Involved
This course consisted of a relatively small class of 10-15 students. In class, we focused on rhetorical writing elements through literacy, genre, and discourse communities. We worked with our classmates to practice adequate writing and peer-reviewing skills. We looked at many different authors and genres of media to further our understanding of English composition.
What I Learned
While taking this class I learned an incredible amount about analyzing and interpreting many different genres of writing. I also learned how to use genre to best communicate with my intended audience. I grew to understand literacy in a way I had never interpreted it before, found new methods of collecting research and data, and gained confidence in my ability to identify and study discourse communities. I am grateful for all of this knowledge I have gained and for how it will help me as a writer in the future.
How It Impacted Me
This course has impacted me in many ways. From helping me become an overall better writer to encouraging me to develop my reading and research skills. Yet, there is one extremely important aspect of this intermediate composition course that impacted me the most: My professor. I took this class with Gary Vaughn expecting your typical English class with your typical papers, readings, and assignments, but Professor Vaughn showed so much enthusiasm, care, and a true want for his students to succeed. This kind of encouragement and support from Professor Vaughn is truly what made this course outstanding and something I will never forget.
