This year, one of the most significant complex problems that caught my attention was income inequality and its impact on social mobility, especially within the city of Cincinnati. Yet, the growing wealth gap between the rich and the poor has become a pressing issue in most societies, leading to numerous social and economic challenges.
To better understand income inequality, I engaged in various activities and approaches. I extensively read books, research papers, and articles on the topic to understand the underlying causes, consequences, and potential solutions. I also followed reputable news sources and attended webinars, conferences, and lectures to stay updated on the latest discussions and debates surrounding income inequality.
Moreover, I sought out diverse perspectives by engaging in conversations with experts such as Elizabeth Gatten the Eichner Post-Doc Research Fellow in Workforce Housing Policy. This allowed me to gain valuable insights and understand the nuances of the issue from different angles.
My goals regarding this complex problem are twofold. Firstly, I aim to deepen my knowledge and understanding of the factors that contribute to income inequality, such as disparities in education, access to resources, systemic biases, and policy decisions. This includes further exploration of both local and global contexts to identify successful strategies that have addressed income inequality effectively.
Secondly, I want to actively contribute to addressing income inequality by going into policy work. I intend to pursue a career in public policy to advocate for equitable policies and initiatives that promote social mobility and reduce income disparities. This may involve working with think tanks, non-governmental organizations, or government agencies focused on socioeconomic development and policy reform. This past year has solidified my career goals more than I could have imagined.
My next steps involve building a strong foundation in policy analysis and research methodologies. I plan to pursue relevant academic programs or internships that provide practical experience and exposure to policy formulation and implementation processes. I will also continue networking with professionals in the field to expand my knowledge and potential opportunities. By combining my passion for policy work and addressing income inequality, I hope to contribute to creating a more equitable society where everyone has a fair chance to not only survive but to succeed and thrive.
